9 Best Powered Subwoofer In 2022 [Compared & Reviewed]

I adore great bass sounds and sensations. A powered subwoofer can improve movies, video games, and music. In my opinion, the right subwoofer can dramatically improve how much you enjoy what you hear.

A great subwoofer can significantly enhance your home theatre’s sound quality, whether you’re watching movies or listening to music. A typical speaker can produce audible bass, but a subwoofer focuses on a lower frequency range, resulting in that distinctive rumble you can feel.

This list of mine is intended to assist you in making the most of your money and room. I’ve also provided some pointers for getting the best bass out of your home stereo or theatre system.

I chose these models based on my listening experiences, customer feedback, ratings, and reviews. It includes some of the best choices for 2022.

What Should I Look for In a Powered Subwoofer?

With subwoofers, there are a few essential factors to take into account. You should consider the size of the room, where the sub will be placed, and the quality and size of your other speakers.

Choosing the right powered subwoofer can make a big difference in how enjoyable your home entertainment system is. In this article, I’ve provided information on the most critical factors to consider when shopping for a subwoofer and which features and specifications are most significant.

Size

When selecting a subwoofer, you should consider its size. Frequency response, expressed in Hz, is a good indicator of how deep a subwoofer will play.

Despite being allured by the prospect of having the biggest subwoofer in the bunch, it’s better if your subwoofer blends in seamlessly with your other speakers to create an immersive listening experience.

A compact satellite or bookshelf speaker system can be paired nicely with an 8″ or 10″ subwoofer. On the other hand, if you have big floor-standing speakers and an oversized center channel, a 12″ subwoofer will provide the best audio.

Is your living space open and spacious? Then a large subwoofer may be a good choice since a large subwoofer moves a lot of air (and thus produces a lot of basses). On the other hand, if your den or bedroom is small, a smaller subwoofer may be a better option not to overwhelm the space.

Bass

It is a personal decision regarding how many subwoofers to purchase. I love dinosaurs and space movies, so I desire bass that shakes my room. I have been using my current 12-inch Klipsch subwoofer for several years, which perfectly satisfies my needs and preferences.

If you don’t require much ‘oomph’ for binge-watching comedy shows or children’s movies, a smaller sub is the way to go, even if you have ample space.

Power

An integrated amplifier is one of the best things about a powered subwoofer. You won’t have to hunt down a separate amplifier to drive it.

There’s no straightforward answer to that question (and I don’t believe boring you with the engineering details will be helpful).

Generally, the higher the wattage of an amp, the more powerful and impactful the bass. I suggest purchasing as much power as your budget allows, but avoid overspending for higher wattage just for a bigger number.

The RMS rating is the spec to keep an eye on when buying a powered subwoofer. You’ll often see a “peak power” rating listed as well. This measurement is flashy on paper, but it has little real-world significance so you can ignore it during your decision-making process.

Sealed or Ported

Subwoofer enclosures can be broken down into two categories: sealed and ported. Sealed enclosures (known as acoustic suspension) are airtight, producing quick, tight bass. Because air cannot move in or out, ported enclosures (also known as acoustic transmission) are much slower.

You get stronger bass without spending as much energy when you use a ported speaker box (or bass reflex enclosure). There is a drawback, however: ported enclosures are typically much larger than sealed ones.

The question of which design provides the best home theater experience is open to debate. In addition to providing clean, hard-hitting bass for movie soundtracks, both designs offer a similar listening experience.

On the other hand, an enclosure’s design can significantly impact sound quality if you play music through your home theater system.

I advise choosing a sealed enclosure if you like jazz, classical, or acoustic music. A ported enclosure is preferable if you like hard rock, hip-hop, or EDM. It’s up to you.

Place

Before buying a sub, measure the area to get an idea of its size. You’ll want to ensure that the sub will fit nicely with your surroundings.

You may remember that I described how your surround sound system connects to your subwoofer. Usually, this involves running and hiding a long cable from one part of the room to another.

Many subs can receive wireless signals from a transmitter that connects to your receiver. The transmitter is included with some subs, but it is an optional accessory for others.

You can also get a wireless sub kit to connect almost any subwoofer to your home theater system wirelessly. Remember that your subwoofer needs to be plugged into an outlet for power or a surge protector.

Despite being one of my least expensive subs, the PSW10 has been a long-standing favorite among home speakers since 2004. It’s an oldie but a goodie.

A great alternative for a medium-sized home theater with excellent bass is the Klipsch SPL-120.

The SPL-120 sub is the type of subwoofer that makes dinosaur and spacecraft movies more realistic in your bedroom. Its formidable 12″ woofer can cause walls to shake when you desire it to. However, it also provides controlled, meticulous bass at lower volume levels.

The shiny copper cap on this subwoofer adds visual pizzazz to the room if the grille is removed.

The Klipsch SPL-120 is a good choice for rooms between medium and large, as it delivers deep, well-controlled bass.

The Definitive Technology Prosub 1000 provides 300W of amplifier power to deliver the deepest booming bass ranges for an exceptional cinematic audio experience. You can adjust the audio to match whatever you’re viewing.

Non-resonant material ensures that your subwoofer doesn’t rattle or lose sound quality, while permanently joined pieces keep it stable on uneven surfaces. In addition, adjustable rubber feet protect your flooring and stabilize your subwoofer.

The Prosub subwoofer has a larger radiation area than previous models, thanks to its 10-inch front-firing driver and radiator. This subwoofer’s automatic on/off function should ensure that it stays on until you turn it off.

I chose the Cambridge Audio Minx X201 when I needed a tiny subwoofer to fit under my desk in my home office. I wanted excellent sound, but I was limited on space—the X201 delivered what I wanted. A small room is defined as one with a volume of roughly 1500 cubic feet or less.

The X201 has been a real swagger-fest, providing excellent bass in a compact package. Of course, it isn’t as sturdy as some of the bigger models. However, my customers adore it.

Although the Minx X201 is relatively tiny, two passive radiators on the sides help it deliver a powerful performance.

ELAC Debut 2.0 Series 200 Watt Powered Subwoofer with a 10-inch bass driver will bring an incredible sense of realism to both movies and music in my review. You can adjust the volume and low pass via dials on the back.

The quality of the MDF cabinet’s black-ash finish fooled me into thinking this woofer was made of natural wood, but its lack of ‘punch’ disappointed me.

The SB-1000 Pro delivers solid, clear bass that makes kick drums, cellos, and bass guitars sound like the real thing.

I particularly like the SB-1000 Pro for multi-purpose setups, as it provides the weight and force I need for movie soundtracks and the clarity and control I desire for evening listening.

Subwoofers typically provide level adjustment, frequency adjustment, and other settings changes through rear-panel knobs and switches. In my experience, these are difficult to adjust, especially when the back of your sub is against a wall.

Using SVS’s free app, controlling the SB-1000 Pro is a cinch. You can alter the sub’s settings from your phone or tablet to immediately hear the adjustments as you sit down.

The PB-2000 Pro is an excellent representation of SVS’s position as a premier subwoofer firm. This app-controlled subwoofer can deliver high-quality bass in large rooms, and it is a perfect choice for feeling the visceral impact of action scenes in your chest (I define a large room as one of roughly 2,000 cubic feet or more).

SVS provides a top-quality wireless subwoofer solution that can make any subwoofer wireless in almost any room.

With the Tri-Band SVS SoundPath wireless adapter, you can locate your sub wherever there is an AC outlet in your room. I enjoy the distortion-free wireless bass it provides in my home theatre.

SVS PB16-Ultra is the ultimate subwoofer in terms of performance and build quality. It is a massive subwoofer that delivers superb performance and fantastic sound quality.

This subwoofer masterpiece weighing 175 pounds, can fill even the largest rooms with titanic bass.

Sure, the PB16-Ultra is capable of producing intense bass. However, its large, ported enclosure provides excellent control. If you want to build an elite stereo or home theater system for a large room, the PB16-Ultra is a perfect choice.

FAQs on Powered Subwoofer

1. Is a powered subwoofer better?

Powered subwoofers tend to be the more popular choice. No extra parts or components are required to make them work, producing a more intense, well-rounded sound.

2. What is the difference between an active subwoofer and powered subwoofer?

An active subwoofer has a built-in amplifier and power source and requires no additional power source. Whereas a powered subwoofer requires another power source such as a receiver or amplifier.

3. What is the purpose of a powered subwoofer?

Subwoofers (subs) are loudspeakers that deliver low-frequency audio known as bass. Passive subs are powered by an external amplifier or A/V receiver, as opposed to traditional speakers, which are powered by an internal amplifier.

4. Do powered subs need an amp?

The powered subwoofer will provide clean car audio system sound without an amp. The standard speakers and subwoofer output typically do not produce a louder sound, and bass frequencies are flat.

5. Can you hook up a powered subwoofer to an amplifier?

If your subwoofer has speaker-level inputs, you are in good shape! Just connect them directly to your amplifier or receiver’s speaker outputs, either to unused speaker terminals or in parallel (in addition) to receiver-connected speakers.

6. What power subwoofer do I need?

It is always a good idea to purchase a subwoofer with at least 300 watts of power. You can always add more speakers if you want, but ensure that the amplifier matches the speaker system.

7. Can you connect speakers to a powered subwoofer?

You can hook up a receiver’s speaker output to a subwoofer’s spring clips if they are present. This approach is similar to hooking up a basic stereo speaker. If the subwoofer has one set of spring clips, link it to the receiver as the speaker.

8. Where should you place your subwoofer?

Placing a subwoofer in a corner can increase its output, resulting in a louder subwoofer. Put your subwoofer in a corner and listen to how it sounds. If your subwoofer is too far from your listening area, you might not be able to place it in a corner, regardless of how much it increases its output.

9. Which is the best active subwoofer?

The SB-3000 has a sealed enclosure, but it can transmit sounds well below the range of human hearing thanks to its 800W of continuous power and a driver specifically designed to accurately transmit very low frequencies. It is a rare creature that excels at theatrical effects and music.

10. Are 10 or 12 subwoofers better?

A 10″ subwoofer is the best choice if you want a no-frills subwoofer that provides accurate bass without distortion and takes up little space. If, on the other hand, you want a subwoofer with more oomph and deeper bass response, you should go for a 12″ subwoofer.

11. How much does a good subwoofer cost?

A quality, the average-sized subwoofer will cost you at least $200. A subwoofer enclosure, speaker, and amplifier are all included. Small, compact subwoofers are available for less. These subwoofers will not sound as good as the larger ones, but they may be a better choice for smaller vehicles.

12. Are Rockville powered subs good?

Yes, Rockville powered subs are excellent. They offer superb bass at a reasonable price. If you want a decent subwoofer, Rockville is a superb option.
