How To Check Monitor Size Using Simple Methods?

This article will teach you how to check monitor size using different methods.

A monitor can be measured using a tape measure or a simple mathematical equation. The size of your computer monitor can be determined using one of three methods: the image area, aspect ratio, or diagonal measurement.

Let us understand them in detail.

How To Check Monitor Size By Determining Image Area
Here are the steps on how to check monitor size by determining the image area:
Check the length of the monitor. Measure only the viewing screen, not the frame or structure surrounding the monitor. You can utilize a ruler to check the horizontal length of the monitor from one end to another.
Check the height of the monitor. Use a ruler to measure the screen’s vertical length from top to bottom. Don’t measure the frame or border around the monitor, just the image area.
First, multiply the length by the height (length x height). Find the image area by multiplying the monitor’s height by the monitor’s length. “Horizontal length x vertical height” expresses the image area.

For example, the image area is determined by multiplying 16 by 10 if the length is 16 inches (40.6 cm) & the height is 10 inches (25.4 cm). Here the image area equals 160 square inches.

How To Check Monitor Size By Finding the Aspect Ratio & Diagonal Measurement

Source

Here are the steps on how to check monitor size by finding the aspect ratio and diagonal measurement:

  • Compare the length and the height to determine the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio of a computer monitor is typically 4:3, 5:3, 16:9, or 16:10. Compare the length to the height & reduce the numbers if necessary to determine the aspect ratio.

The aspect ratio is 16:9 if the length is 16 inches (40.6 cm) and the height is 9 inches (22.9 cm).

On the other hand, the aspect ratio is 25:15 if the length is 25 inches (63.5 cm) & the height is 15 inches (38.1 cm). 25:15 can be divided by 5 to reduce it to 5:3

  • The size of the monitor is usually described in terms of diagonal measurement. Use a tape measure or ruler to find the distance between the top left and bottom right corners. Check the distance between opposite corners to find the diagonal. Don’t include the bezel or border around the screen.
  • Use the Pythagorean theorem to measure the distance of the diagonal. You can use the Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal distance if the screen is too big to measure diagonally or if you do not want to smudge it. The diagonal measurement is found by squaring the screen’s height and width and then taking the square root of their sum.

For instance, if the height is 12 inches (30.9 cm), multiply that by itself (12×12=144). Then, multiply the length, 18 inches (45.7 cm), by itself (18×18=324). Add the 2 numbers together (144+324=468), then find the square root of the sum (√468=21.6).

Important Note:

You can also find the monitor size by looking up the model number on the manufacturer’s website or a search engine.

Some websites will tell you the dimensions of your computer screen based on the number of pixels they detect, such as Infobyip.

How To Check Monitor Size With a Measuring Tape

Regarding productivity, screen resolution is as important as screen size. There are various screen sizes available on desktop computers and laptops. You can also determine the size of a screen filter by getting the correct measurements.

You can use a measuring tape or ruler to calculate the actual physical size of a computer display, which is expressed in inches.

The computer or the laptop’s manual will tell you the monitor size. In cases where a sticker is absent, you can use a measuring tape to determine the size of your current monitor or a new one you wish to purchase.

Here are the steps on how to check monitor size with a measuring tape:

How To Check Monitor Size With a Measuring Tape
Utilize a measuring tape of sufficient length.
Begin at the top-left corner and run down the diagonal to the bottom-right corner. Pull it down to the bottom-left corner if you start from the top-right corner.
You need to measure only the screen. Don’t measure the bezel or the casing around the screen.
The diagonal measure is the screen size.

Important Note:

When searching online for the precise size of a computer monitor or laptop screen, type in the make and model number online, & you’ll receive the specifications immediately. You can also obtain this information from the manufacturer’s website.

How To Check Monitor Size With Simple Math

Source

A computer monitor can be measured using the Pythagorean theorem. It states that for any right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. The hypotenuse is the diagonal length that indicates the screen size in a computer.

Here are the steps on how to check monitor size with simple mathematics:

Check the width and height of the screen, & then add the square of the width and height of the screen. Take out the square root of this addition to get the diagonal measurement and the screen size.

For example, a Dell XPS 13 has a screen height of 6.51 inches and a width of 11.57 inches.

First, take out the square of the height and width –

Height = 6.51 x 6.51 = 42.38

Width = 11.57 x 11.57 = 133.86

Add them –

Sum = 42.38 + 133.86 = 176.24

Now, take out the square root of the sum = √176.24 = 13.28

13.3 inches is the size of a Dell XPS 13 laptop monitor.

Important Note:

Online calculators such as Omni Calculator can quickly estimate the dimensions with the diagonal, width, or height. Enter one of the three measurements, and the other two will be calculated for you.

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions) on How to Check Monitor Size

1. How do I know the size of my monitor?

You need to physically measure the screen to estimate the size of a desktop computer monitor. Start at the top-left corner and pull a measuring tape diagonally to the bottom-right corner, not including the bezel (the plastic edge).

2. What size is a 1920×1080 monitor?

A 1920×1080 monitor is a 23/24-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 1920 x 1080 resolution (also known as Full-HD).

3. How do you measure a 27 inch monitor?

When determining the size of a monitor, you must consider its width, height, and thickness. A 27-inch monitor is typically 24 inches wide x 17 inches tall, but the thickness can range from 2 to 7 inches.
